OVERVIEW OF SURGICAL FACELIFT & NECK LIFT IN THE LOS ANGELES AREA
Dr. Nguyen, a facelift specialist in Beverly Hills, favors the “deep plane” technique, also referred to as a “SMAS Lift” or “Composite Lift.” Unlike procedures that simply address sagging skin, the deep plane facelift repositions the underlying tissue called the “SMAS layer.” Pulling this layer taut allows the redraped skin to sit naturally in its new position. It also alleviates tension on the incision lines which allows for better healing. Before the wound is closed, a fibrin glue is sprayed beneath the skin. This technique greatly minimizes bruising and swelling, reduces the risk of hematoma (bleeding under the skin) and alleviates the need for drainage tubes. When choosing a facial plastic surgeon, patients should seek out a Board-Certified facelift specialist who is well trained in this advanced surgical technique. The overall effect is a more natural appearance as opposed to only tightening the skin.

HOW SHOULD I PREPARE FOR A FACELIFT OR NECK LIFT?
Step one of any surgical procedure is to come in for an initial consultation with Dr. Nguyen. At this time, he will meticulously examine your face’s and neck’s skin laxity – as well as study your medical history. From there, he can accurately determine whether you are a facelift and/or neck lift surgery candidate. It’s possible, for example, that injectables or laser therapy may be more appropriate for your symptoms.
If approved for surgery, Dr. Nguyen will give you important preparation instructions you’ll need to follow. In general, these directions will include quitting smoking for at least six weeks before and six weeks after your operation. Additionally, you’ll be asked to avoid certain medications, like aspirin and ibuprofen, for 7-10 days and cease drinking alcoholic beverages starting three days prior.
HOW FACELIFTS AND NECK LIFTS WORK
The SMAS layer is pulled to the point that it enables the redraped skin to sit directly on top of its original position. Through this procedure, it also lessens the stress on the incisions which can lead to a faster recovery.
Prior to the wound being closed, the specialist sprays fibrin glue beneath the epidermis. This ingenious strategy lessens the swelling and bruising within the area. There’s no need to worry about suffering from hematoma if you undergo this procedure and drainage tubes will not be necessary.
The surgeon raises the skin from the cheeks, temples, and neck. The skin is lifted and repositioned together with the underlying connective tissue.
There are instances where a neck lift is also ideal. This procedure uses a tiny incision under the skin – usually where there’s a natural crease. Then, the muscle underneath the lower jaw is spread apart to tighten the area. During neck lift surgery, the muscles are coiled and the unneeded fat and skin are taken out. Those who want to restore their jawline and create a more youthful look should consider a neck lift and facelift together, as these procedures usually go hand in hand.
WHO ARE GOOD CANDIDATES FOR A FACELIFT PROCEDURE?
– Those who are suffering from loose skin are perfect candidates for skin tightening.
– Those with excess skin after significant weight loss.
STEPS TO A SUCCESSFUL NECK LIFT AND FACELIFT RECOVERY
The advanced techniques used by Dr. Nguyen help ease the recovery process so you can enjoy your results as soon as possible. You can minimize discomfort, speed up your healing time, and avoid complications by following these tips:
– Leave your surgical bandages and any sutures in place until they are removed by Dr. Nguyen
– Sleep with your head elevated to reduce swelling. During the daytime, you may use a cold compress, following a pattern of 20 minutes on, 20 minutes off.
–For a few days, limit yourself to soft foods that do not put significant straight on your face and neck. Besides liquids, we suggest mashed potatoes, eggs, pudding, and mashed vegetables.
– Avoid strenuous activities (like the gym and heavy lifting) for at least two weeks. However, short daily walks are recommended to avoid blood clots.
