HOW SKIN LASERS WORK
There are a few differences between the two treatments. Ablative lasers vaporize the top layer of the damaged skin, whereas non-ablative lasers penetrate the surface and ensure that the top layer of skin won’t sustain further damage during the procedure. There isn’t any real patient downtime connected with non-ablative laser surgery.
The standard type of laser treatment is the ablative laser treatment. Dr. Nguyen only employs a portion of Carbon Dioxide and it is used for resurfacing. The ablative laser treatment is often referred to as CO2 Laser. With laser facial rejuvenation, only a fraction of the CO2 laser is needed for the procedure. This specific laser wavelength focuses on water molecules which penetrate deep within the skin and stimulate collagen production.
CO2 laser resurfacing can eliminate fine line and wrinkles. It can also reduce the appearance of hyper-pigmentation, while improving the overall texture, color, and tone of the skin at the same time. This type of treatment is usually done in a series of three sessions which is administered every month to achieve optimum results. With this type of laser procedure you can expect 3-5 days of downtime, and the recovery process lasts for about a week. Patients who underwent laser treatment can experience some mild to moderate swelling. Some have reported the feeling of discomfort during the treatment, but this can easily be resolved with the use of a topical cream numbing agent which is applied directly to the skin. Pain relievers can also be taken by the patient if needed.

THE CANDELA VBEAM PERFECTA
Dr. Nguyen is one of the few cosmetic surgeons that uses the Candela Vbeam Perfecta. This is a type of non-ablative pulsed-dye laser treatment The term “ablative” refers to the removal of tissue (in this case, skin tissue).
Therefore, the Vbeam Perfecta’s non-ablative laser energy ensures that the top layer of skin (epidermis) is not removed during treatment. However, the pulsed energy still penetrates deep into the blood vessels below, stimulating the body’s healing processes to remedy skin imperfections.

We’ll begin by cleansing the skin, giving you eye protection to wear, and then applying a topical numbing cream for your comfort. Although it is rarely necessary, Dr. Nguyen may sometimes allow for additional pain relievers. Next, the Vbeam Perfecta’s handpiece is gradually moved across the treatment area(s) as needed. Once the procedure is complete, you can head home right away.
AFTERCARE
There is no significant recovery period needed after your laser treatment. The treated areas may experience redness for a few hours and may appear sunburnt. Cold compresses can help alleviate discomfort.
Avoid prolonged sun exposure, and regularly apply sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) to protect your skin while it is healing. Avoid scrubbing the area vigorously to prevent irritation, and keep away from hot baths or saunas. You can apply makeup or deodorant 24 to 48 hours after the procedure.

ABOUT DR. NGUYEN
Davis B. Nguyen, M.D. grew up in southern California, where he graduated from the University of California (UCLA), summa cum laude. He then earned a Whipple Scholarship to attend medical school at the University of Rochester in New York. While in medical school, Dr. Nguyen completed a one year research fellowship in general surgery at Harvard Medical School. This was followed by an internship in general surgery and a five year residency in Otolaryngology-Head and Neck Surgery at Yale University.
Dr. Nguyen then completed a fellowship at the USC affiliated Lasky Clinic with Dr. Frank M. Kamer in Beverly Hills, under the auspices of the American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery.
