OVERVIEW OF SURGICAL AND NON-SURGICAL LIP PROCEDURES IN THE LOS ANGELES AREA
RISK AND BENEFITS
As compared to other cosmetic procedures, the risks and complications involved with lip surgeries are relatively low. It’s always ideal to be familiar with the possible outcome before having any type of surgical procedure. Some of the risks involved include infection, implant rejection, implant migration, numbness of the lips, and scarring. These risks are greatly reduced by choosing a reputable surgeon.
The main advantage of permanent lip surgery is that you’ll be able to enjoy long lasting results, unlike with temporary fillers that are eventually absorbed by the body.
HOW IT WORKS
Before having a lip augmentation procedure, it’s very important to follow the pre-operative instructions given by the doctor, such as the following:
– Weeks before the surgery, don’t take any medications, herbs, or vitamins.
– Don’t drink or eat anything after 12:00 am before the day of the procedure.
– Wear comfortable clothes before going to your appointment.
– You won’t be able to drive home after the procedure. Bring a family member or friend who can drive you home.
Lip augmentation using dermal fillers is less invasive than the other methods, which may involve transferring fat into the lips through liposuction of another area of the body. Those who undergo dermal fillers can still drive themselves to and from their appointments if they don’t take any pain medication during or after the procedure.
WHO ARE GOOD CANDIDATES FOR A LIP LIFT PROCEDURE?
Anyone who is over 18 may be a good candidate for lip augmentation. Those with naturally thin lips or suffering from age-related issues that decrease lip volume, can also consider having lip implants.
Before undergoing the procedure, make sure that you’re in good health, and try to have reasonable expectations about the outcome. In Beverly Hills, Dr. Nguyen is one of the practitioners who shows before and after pictures of previous patients to give his new patients an idea of what they can expect after getting lip implants, fat transfer, and lip fillers.

RECOVERY
After the procedure, recovery usually calls for a little downtime. Often, patients who have undergone this procedure can continue with their regular routine right after the surgery. There’s always the possibility of feeling slight discomfort which can be controlled by the help of over-the-counter pain relievers.
For fat implants, 10 days after the surgery sutures outside the mouth will be removed and the sutures inside will eventually dissolve. Within this period, the lips may feel a little numb until the healing process is complete.
MEDICAL CONSIDERATIONS
Since there’s a slight chance of experiencing allergic reactions from the materials used for this procedure, patients should indicate any pre-existing allergies to the physician. Those who undergo the surgical procedure for lip augmentation should mention if they have any respiratory ailments that could be triggered under anesthesia.
There are also several kinds of lip implants and dermal fillers that should be used in lip augmentation. It’s important to note that these choices are not without risk. To guarantee optimum results you should work with a surgeon whom you can fully trust. That means he/she should only utilize FDA approved products and be extra careful when selecting a method suitable for your needs.
As for temporary fillers used to improve thin lips, the duration of time the lip volume will last is based on the amount of time the body breaks down the filler elements. The surgeon would be able to provide a general estimate of how long the product is going to last.
FAQS
Most lip procedures are performed under local anesthesia or with sedatives, so you should not experience any significant pain during the procedure. Post-operative discomfort is typically managed with pain medication prescribed by your surgeon.
The length of effects depend on the type of procedure and the materials used. Lip fillers may last several months to a year, while lip implants may last longer. Aging, lifestyle factors, and follow-up treatments can also affect the duration of results.

We generally recommend avoiding strenuous activities and travel during the initial stages of recovery. Your surgeon will provide specific guidelines for safe and successful healing.
While you’ll notice an immediate difference in your lips, the final results may take a few weeks. During this time, any noticeable swelling will subside and bruises will fade.
Maintaining results often involves following a healthy lifestyle, protecting your lips from excessive sun exposure, and considering periodic touch-up treatments if you’ve opted for temporary lip fillers.
Most patients can speak and eat normally after the initial healing period. Expect to adjust to any temporary discomfort or swelling for a few days.
Your surgeon may recommend a soft diet immediately after the procedure to avoid straining your lips. As your lips heal, you can gradually resume a regular diet.
