OVERVIEW OF SURGICAL AND NON-SURGICAL NOSE PROCEDURES IN THE LOS ANGELES AREA

RHINOPLASTY PROCEDURE

Since rhinoplasty is a rather complex and customized surgery, the procedures are not always performed the same way. Surgeons usually take a more artistic approach to the nasal surgery procedure, and normally use different techniques as required to meet the patient’s goals. Rhinoplasty is normally performed under anesthesia, and takes only a few hours to finish. The incisions made are very small and they’re done externally between the nostrils, or at times inside the nostrils. Some of the techniques which might be used during the procedure include, but are not limited to: cartilage grafting, bone rasping, nostril re-positioning, osteotomy (that is, breaking the nose) and straightening the nasal septum.

In a typical rhinoplasty surgery procedure, the surgeon sculpts the bone and the cartilage of the nose to achieve the patient’s desired appearance. The surgery is done through an incision which is made inside, or at times outside the nostrils. A splint (plastic or metal) might be placed outside of the nose to help maintain the newly constructed shape of the bone after the surgery is completed. Nasal packs or soft plastic splints may also be placed in between the nostrils to help keep the dividing walls between the air passages stable.

HOW RHINOPLASTY WORKS

SEPTOPLASTY

Septoplasty is a surgical procedure which is done to fix a deviated nasal septum. Deviated septum usually occurs when the nasal cartilage which separates the nostrils gets out of position; this can result in breathing problems, pain and even nosebleeds. The main objective of the septoplasty procedure is to correct the septum alignment to improve the airflow through the nose.

SEPTOPLASTY PROCEDURE

Septoplasty is normally an outpatient procedure which can be done under either general or local anesthesia. A septoplasty procedure can take anywhere between 30-90 minutes to finish, depending on the overall complexity of the patient’s condition. During the septoplasty procedure, the surgeon will try to straighten the bone and the cartilage which have made the septum become deviated. The surgeon will make an incision (a cut) on one side of the nose to get access to the septum. The mucous membrane (that is, the lining) is lifted off the bone and cartilage, and the deviated septum is then moved into the correct position. At times, some portions of the bone and the cartilage may be removed. After that, the mucous membrane gets laid back down. Since the septal cartilage has what is known as memory (the tendency to assume its initial shape or position), it may bend after the procedure. Therefore, you might need some stitches to properly hold the septum and the membrane in place. Alternatively, packing your nose with cotton can also be enough to keep the septum and membrane in position.

WHO ARE GOOD CANDIDATES FOR A NOSE PROCEDURE?

– Those who have breathing impairments caused by nose structural defects.
– Those who want to increase or reduce the size of your nose.
– Those who may want to change the shape of the nasal bridge or the tip.
– Those who may want to change the nasal asymmetry.
– Those who may want to narrow the opening of the nostrils.
– Correction to injuries or birth defects, and more.

RHINOPLASTY

The nose is one of the most prominent facial features and any sort of defect is easily noticeable. For people who are dissatisfied with the appearance of their nose, or have problems with the nasal structure, rhinoplasty is the ideal treatment option. Also commonly referred to as a nose job, rhinoplasty is a plastic surgery procedure that corrects and reconstructs the form of the nose, restores function, and even aesthetically enhances the nose.

Rhinoplasty can also;
-Correct breathing impairments caused by nose structural defects.
-Increase or reduce the size of your nose.
-Change the shape of the nasal bridge or the tip.
-Change the nasal asymmetry.
-Narrow the opening of the nostrils.
-Correct injuries or birth defects, and more.

Since the nose is one of the first features which people tend to notice, nasal aesthetics usually have a great impact on the overall balance and harmony between the features of your face. Improving nasal aesthetics can greatly boost your confidence and self-esteem. Functional rhinoplasty can also greatly improve quality of life by improving your breathing and help with disorders like snoring and sleep apnea

RHINOPLASTY RECOVERY

Normally, patients can go home the same day after the procedure. The initial recovery can be uncomfortable. However, it’s usually not as bad as most patients expect. After the procedure, your nose and face might be swollen, and some patients can experience a headache. You can ease the pain and reduce the swelling by using prescribed medication. The nasal packing can be removed after 4 to 5 days. Full recovery will take a couple of weeks.

WHAT ARE DR. NGUYEN’S PATIENTS SAYING?

OUR PHILOSOPHY

We feel that the approach to facial plastic surgery by both patient and doctor should be a conservative one, and the result should appear natural and balanced.
There are several core philosophical principles that drive our practice. We feel that the approach to facial plastic surgery by both patient and doctor should be a conservative one. We feel that results should appear natural and balanced so that a patient looks like the best version of his or herself, not a bizarre approximation of someone else. We believe that the best outcomes are achieved when a patient and surgeon share a common objective and when there is consensus regarding aesthetic taste. We encourage a holistic approach to anti-aging because true youthfulness requires a combination of attitude, physical well being, as well as appearance. While facial plastic surgery is often pursued to restore a youthful appearance, its results are most effective when a patient is vigilant about preserving mind, body, and spirit alike. Last, and perhaps most importantly, we believe that each of our patient’s needs is unique and that their course of treatment should reflect that of uniqueness. We strive to give the utmost in personalized care and service. From your first phone call to our office through your final follow-up visit, you will be given the time and attention needed to help you realize your individual aesthetic goals.
